87,000 GBV Related Hotline Calls During SA's Lockdown

South Africa’s lockdown has been said to be one of the most restrictive in the world. During this time, police and military soldiers were dispatched to the townships of South Africa, creating a pseudo-military occupation. There have been “quite a number of women saying they don’t feel safe with police,” in the past, making this type of occupation even more threatening to this group.

Alarmingly, albeit unsurprisingly, there were 87,000+ calls to GBV hotlines from individuals concerned for their safety in their homes. In this episode of Wise Talk, Onica Makwakwa and Brenda Madumise-Pajibo discuss the impact of lockdown on gender-based violence.
