We Need Protectors and Not Perpetrators

As a woman living in South Africa, I have to be grateful for every day I remain alive. I have to be thankful to survive another day in South Africa; where any day I could be next,next to be a headline or hashtag. Next to be mourned or missing. It could happen any day and anywhere. It could happen in an Uber, it could happen at a party, it could happen at home, it could happen in a post office. The frustrating part is that I’m responsible for my safety. I’m the one who has to make sure I make the Uber driver aware that I’ve shared his information and my ride with multiple friends. I need to make sure my dress doesn’t invite any unwanted attention. I’m the one who has to be wary of men in post offices.

Popularizing the National Strategic Plan on GBVF

It’s no secret that South Africa is ranked globally as the most dangerous place for women to live. At the same time, South Africa is celebrated internationally for its progressive policies and legislation on equality in general yet the aspiration of this vision is yet to be realized by many women who don’t enjoy a basic constitutional right to safety.

OPEN LETTER TO SADC TROIKA on State Violence in eSwatini

The violence and brutality of the government of eSwatini cannot just be condemned or be dealt with through issuance of lukewarm statements but requires decisiveness in holding the government accountable to the violence and atrocities visited upon the people of eSwatini. We call on the leaders of SADC to act swiftly against the government of Eswatini by demanding an immediate cease of violence against its citizens and ensuring that every citizen injured receives medical attention and those responsible for acts of violence are brought to justice to account for their actions.
