Driven by African women, Wise 4 Afrika is a leading advocacy organization and aspiring social enterprise committed to dismantling patriarchy, advancing gender equality, and creating sustainable solutions to end gender-based violence (GBV).

Founded in 2018 from a powerful grassroots movement, our organization has shaped national policy, co-drafted the National Strategic Plan on GBV & Femicide, and championed legal reform to ensure justice for survivors.

The founders of Wise 4 Afrika are not just activists, they are strategic policy influencers, legal reformers, and economic visionaries who are reshaping South Africa’s approach to gender justice, accountability, and women’s empowerment.

Brenda
Madumise-Pajibo

A lawyer by training and a gender activist by choice, Advocate Brenda Madumise-Pajibo is a trailblazer in gender justice and legal reform in South Africa.

As an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and a certified mediator, she has spent her career at the intersection of law, policy, and feminist activism.

Brenda has held high-level positions in government, served on numerous private-sector boards, and played an instrumental role in shaping policy instruments to combat systemic discrimination against women.

She was a key contributor to major legislative and policy frameworks, including:

  • The Termination of Pregnancy Act, ensuring reproductive rights for women.
  • The Situation Analysis on the Status of Women in South Africa, a pivotal research initiative informing gender policy.
  • Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Booklets, shaping workplace protections for women.

Championing Feminist Legal Solutions

Brenda co-founded WISE4AFRIKA to challenge patriarchy and toxic masculinity and drive sustainable solutions for gender equality. Under her leadership, the organization is developing a Women’s Legal Defense Fund, dedicated to providing legal aid for:

  • Survivors of sexual harassment, assault, and violations.
  • Women fighting for protection orders, child custody, and child support.
  • Cases involving statutory rape and gender-based violence.

A force in feminist jurisprudence, Brenda continues to use her legal expertise to dismantle systemic barriers, hold institutions accountable, and create pathways for justice for women and marginalized communities.

Nonhlanhla
Makwakwa

A feminist first, Onica Nonhlanhla Makwakwa is a consumer, civil, and digital rights advocate with an extensive track record in policy transformation and social justice activism.

She has led groundbreaking campaigns at national and international levels, shaping policies on:

  • Women’s rights and gender justice
  • Civil rights and freedom of expression
  • Consumer protection and media transformation
  • Digital rights and internet accessibility for disadvantaged populations

Onica brings a strong intersectional perspective to feminist advocacy, ensuring that women’s rights are centered in digital and media policy.

As the Africa Regional Lead for the World Wide Web Foundation, she spearheads:

  • Multi-stakeholder engagement for the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) to ensure broadband is accessible and equitable.
  • The Africa Summit on Women and Girls in Technology, advocating for gender-inclusive technology and media policies.

A global thought leader in digital transformation and feminist advocacy, Onica’s work ensures that women’s rights are embedded in the future of technology, governance, and public policy.
